Marijuana use has many health myths around it, these myths are often used as arguments against the legalization/decriminalization of marijuana use and production. There are now countless studies that have disproved many of these health myths regarding the harmfulness of marijuana. These include: the National Academy of Sciences' "Analysis of Marijuana Policy"(1982); the National Commission on Marihuana and Drug Abuse (the Shafer Report) (1973); the Canadian Government's Commission of Inquiry (Le Dain Report) (1970); the British Advisory Committee on Drug Dependency (Wooton Report) (1968); the La Guardia Report (1944); the Panama Canal Zone Military Investigations (1916-29); and Britain's monumental Indian Hemp Drugs Commission (1893-4). As seen in the image above, the proven health benefits of marijuana use include; 1. Treats migraines, 2. Prevents Alzheimer's, 3. Slows tumor growth, 4. Relieves symptoms of chronic diseases, 5. Treats Glaucoma, 6. Prevents Seizures, 7. Helps those with ADD & ADHD, 8. Treating Multiple Sclerosis, 9. Calms those with Tourette's and OCD, 10. Helps relieve PMS. As you can see the health consequences of marijuana use is highly in favour of the the legalization viewpoint. Using health effects as an argument against marijuana legalization is simply foolish, alcohol and tobacco use have much larger health consequences than marijuana could ever have, and they are currently legal. I feel as though one of the main drivers in this propaganda against marijuana use comes from pressures from the drug industry, as you can see the use of marijuana would make many drugs obsolete and therefore cut into profits from large drug companies. Although people are becoming more and more vocal in the fight to legalize marijuana, it is still not enough. A revolution of thought amongst politicians and the government as a whole must be facilitated by the people. People must be vocal on their stance, while remaining educated on the subject, and therefore only spreading the cold hard facts and truth about marijuana. There are clearly no health related reasons as to why marijuana should be illegal, and as an adult male living in a free country, I should have the option and choice as to whether I consume this substance or not.
